Recently SEMI Hockey product Butch LaRoue was chosen by the Prince George Cougars in the WHL Bantam draft. This year’s draft was for the top 2001 born players from western Canada and the US. Butch joins a long list of SEMI Hockey prospects that are poised to find success beyond minor hockey.

In recent years, SEMI Hockey has been producing high performance hockey talent at an impressive rate. Please join us in celebrating some of the recent SEMI developed athletes that are making noise in major junior, college hockey and some who are even knocking on the door of the NHL.

The 1997 birth year included 7 players drafted into the WHL and now boasts two 2015 NHL draft picks, Matthew Bradley (Montreal Canadians) and Devante Stephens (Buffalo Sabres). In addition forward Mitch Newsome (Coquitlam Express BCHL) has a college commitment to Michigan Tech University.

Several 1998 birth year players have also had exciting years, including Jeffery Stewart (Surrey Eagles) playing in the CJHL Jr. A top prospects game, and recently committing to Colgate University in the NCAA.Ty Westgard (Victoria Royals WHL), and Davis Koch (Edmonton Oil Kings WHL) being ranked as prospects for this year’s NHL draft. Matt Barberis also enjoyed a successful rookie season with the Vancouver Giants.
Ben Evanish was the leading scorer in the BC Major Midget League and a BC all-star. Michael Regush, who played this past season with the Merritt Centennials (BCHL) recently committed to play at Cornell University.

Michael Rasmussen, born in 1999, had an outstanding WHL rookie season with the Tri-City Americans, and was invited to the Hockey Canada U17 and U18 selection camps. Look for him to be a top prospect for the 2017 NHL draft.

The 2000 birth year for Semi Hockey has proven to be one of the most successful years in terms of players being protected by WHL teams. In the 2015 Bantam Draft, seven Semi developed players were drafted, and since then, two more players have been listed.

Many others in the 99 and 2000 age groups are expected to debut in the BCHL this year in pursuit of future college hockey commitments.

The future also seems bright as recently two SEMI Bantam players were selected to the U16 BC Cup, and 11 2002 born Bantams were invited to the U15 BC Cup.

Regardless of where these players end up, or where they are playing today, it’s clear that the development years in Semiahmoo Minor had a positive influence on them. Whether it’s the water, who can tell, but Semi Hockey as produced a continuous stream of high calibre players that have gone on to success, with many more to come.
